Our Homes - The Spinney
The Spinney is a three bed home and the newest addition to Direct Care. Surrounded by lush farmland and located near Welford in the heart of the Midlands, the home is ideally situated for young people across the many counties in the area. The home provides the ideal setting for young people who need to be placed at a distance from harmful situations or immediate geographical risks which they have generated.
The structure and culture of The Spinney revolves around a strong military theme which is led by the home manager who is himself a former serviceman. This in turn influences the routines which look towards engagement in extensive physical and outdoor activity. These activities are used to promote self-esteem and raise the confidence of the young people. Members of the staff team are trained in various aspects of fitness and sports which are used in the care and development of the young people. There are a number of footpaths and bridleways in close proximity to the home which are used for both mountain biking and walks. The staff are keen to combine physical activity and enjoyment with learning and place great emphasis on education through experience.
Alongside the physical activities at The Spinney the staff and young people are planning the creation of a small farmhouse. With chickens to provide eggs and a vegetable patch in the garden, the young people will learn how to provide and grow their own food which helps build confidence and independence. The staff also hope to work with the RSPCA on their Foster a Pet Scheme whereby animals are looked after while they are found a new home. The animals can help therapeutically to develop confidence and trust in the young people as well as educating them in countryside skills.
As with all Direct Care homes, The Spinney provides a caring, safe and homely environment that is sensitive to the difficulties caused by past experiences and encourages the young people to grow and progress.
